In emerging areas of work where knowledge and application become intertwined, it is imperative to unify the learner and the doer to best address social problems. ALSO accomplishes this by creating learning communities where participants – from practice, policy, academia and community - are collaborators and pioneers of change. One member’s perspective is not preferred over another’s; all members have equal voice, and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. ALSO’s learning communities are culturally sensitive, culturally relevant and engage community members as active partners in addressing social problems. Knowledge creation is reciprocal and ongoing. Members receive and share knowledge, both locally and nationally, through peer-based technical assistance. ALSO delivers peer-to-peer consulting as an extension of its learning community model. The consultants are practitioners, policymakers, and academics from across the country who are engaged with ALSO to bridge the gap between learning and doing to create needs-responsive assistance to jurisdictions nationwide.
